Micklefield pupils get a lesson in building site safety.

Children from Micklefield C of E Primary School had a lesson with a difference this week on the dangers posed by building sites. We enlisted the help of industry mascot Ivor Goodsite, created by the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme, to raise awareness of site safety and to engage with the young audience.

We are building a luxury housing development adjacent to the school which is earmarked for completion in Spring 2018 and we wanted to invite Ivor to help educate pupils aged 2-11 about safety on construction sites.

Pupils attended a morning assembly, presentation and Q&A session followed by site visits to the Manor Chase housing scheme with Ivor and a team from Mandale Homes. The pupils also all entered a competition to design a health and safety themed poster based on their learnings. The winning creative design has now been chosen and will be put up on the site and will receive a £20 WH Smith voucher.

The visit formed part of our community engagement programme and was also designed to engage pupils about careers in the construction sector and to talk about the opportunities of working within the industry.

As Micklefield School is located opposite our Manor Chase 12-home luxury development, it seemed fitting that we should work with the head teacher to educate children about site safety measures. Ivor Goodsite is a fun character who helps us raise awareness of this important subject by engaging with youngsters not only about health and safety, but also about how great it is to work within the industry.

Gillian Dodsworth, Head Teacher at Micklefield C of E Primary School commented on the visit:

Our children were excited to meet Ivor Goodsite and were fully engaged by the Mandale Homes assembly presentation on site safety. They enjoyed their visit to the building site and this motivated them to create their health and safety-themed posters with great enthusiasm. It was a valuable educational experience for them and has raised awareness of how to keep themselves safe.
